HIGHS, LOWS, FIRE AND WATER DEFINE RACING WEEKEND AT AUTO CLUB SPEEDWAY

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif., May 28, 2019 –Spec Miata driver and Mazda Teen Challenge member Hannah Grisham earned another team win Saturday at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana CA. This contrasted starkly with Sunday’s low point, as young gun driver Austin Edwards had an exciting weekend, with an under-hood fire in qualifying Saturday which destroyed an amazing new vehicle wrap. But he was able to race after the team made a run back to its home-base shop and retrieved another car for him, with efforts well-rewarded with the hard charger award as Edwards started at the back and finished ninth. The excitement didn’t end there, as Edwards had his first experience in a wet practice but was third quickest, only to lose an engine in the Sunday qualifying race.

Across the rest of the weekend, recent high school graduate, Charlie “Chuck” Jimenez, finished up his HPDE 4 experience in his #13 2005 Mazda MX-5 Miata. Jim and Dennis Holloway shared driving duties Saturday and Sunday in a 1999 Miata. It’s been a while since Jim’s last race, and it was good to have him back. The brothers’ rivalry was a draw over the weekend. Chase Gilhart learned a tough lesson on Saturday, with a loose battery terminal ending his race early. Sunday’s hard charger was Ken Saward in his Mazda Miata, as he gained eight spots during the race.

The NASA Southern California Region included a three-hour enduro for the first time at Auto Club, which saw the team enter three cars. With the team running under the name, “RDR - Old, Fat, and Slow”, team-leader Robert Davis started the race and drove a solid stint in the team’s Mazda RX-8, until an electrical issue stopped the car in its tracks. The second team ran under the name “RDR - Older, Fatter and Slower” in a Spec Miata, and finished third with Dennis Holloway and Ken Saward. The final RDR team, “Apex Hunters”, finished second, with Jim Holloway and Chase Gilhart in the #53 Spec Miata.
